Scalp Micro Pigmentation Q & A

What is scalp micro pigmentation?

Treatments for hair loss involve a mix of surgical and nonsurgical options that regrow lost hair, surgically replace it, or cosmetically compensate for it. Scalp micro pigmentation (SMP) is an innovative treatment option that uses pigments directly on the scalp, similar to a tattoo, to give the appearance of hair.

At Elysium SurgiSpa, a licensed tattoo specialist uses microfine needles to create thousands of little impressions on the scalp, injecting pigment with each one. Think about it like the artistic process of stippling. The thousands of tiny dots of pigment create the illusion of hair or make spots of thinning hair appear denser.

Scalp micro pigmentation can be used as a complement to hair restoration or to provide an alternative solution to hair transplant surgery.

Scalp micro pigmentation can work on any of the following issues:

  • Spot baldness (or alopecia)
  • Density loss
  • Scar treatment
  • Hair transplant supplementation
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Women’s hair loss

Your licensed tattoo specialist starts by identifying the issue that scalp micro pigmentation will address and then determines whether you’re a good candidate for the treatment.

Am I a candidate for scalp micro pigmentation?

Elysium SurgiSpa recommends that you consider scalp micro pigmentation if you’ve recently or previously experienced hair loss. There are many hair loss treatments out there, but very few offer long-lasting and safe results.

You might be a good candidate for scalp micro pigmentation if you have:

  • Receding hairline
  • Balding around the crown
  • Medicine or disease-related hair loss

Your licensed tattoo specialist may recommend scalp micro pigmentation if you’ve gone through cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, that have resulted in hair loss.

In other cases, scalp micro pigmentation is useful in getting rid of transplant-related scalp scars or if you’ve experienced hair loss in a horseshoe-shaped Norwood 6 pattern.

How does scalp micro pigmentation work?

A licensed tattoo specialist at Elysium SurgiSpa first starts by determining your type of hair loss and whether scalp micro pigmentation can deliver the results you want. Once you’ve been cleared for the treatment, you’ll discuss the style and color of hair you want your specialist to create.

From there, your tattoo specialist will get you in for your first SMP session, where they start to add pigment to the scalp. Your specialist uses needles of different sizes, angles, penetration depths, pigment colors, and speeds to treat the area.

Most SMP treatments last anywhere from 6-10 hours, and need to be broken down into multiple sessions to allow your scalp to heal and to achieve your targeted density and darkness.

You should keep your scalp dry for five days after each session. After your scalp has had time to absorb the new pigment, you can schedule another appointment with your tattoo specialist at Elysium SurgiSpa to continue. It’s typically recommended that you follow up with your tattoo specialist for more sessions every 4-6 years in the event that further hair loss or fading occurs.
